Ocean Grounds’ venture starts in 2009, when Jimmy Lee opened his first little coffee stall in San Diego. In 2011 he took a step further and brought the chain into Beijing, where he now has several shops already.
And Shanghai couldn’t be missing on this joyful coffee project!
At Ocean Grounds they not only care about the quality of their organic beans, but also they take a unique pride in pioneering the coffee industry through their science based, “fourth wave” techniques in brewing, roasting and mixing their coffee.
I had the luck of spending an afternoon with Jimmy Lee at OG’s Xintiandi outlet. He took special care in personally introducing the various coffees and prepare them for us. Do sit at one of their bar stools and try to strike a conversation with him, he’s a fantastic storyteller and will fill you in with priceless coffee-knowledge.
I absolutely loved their signature OG New Orleans Style iced coffee (RMB 58). Only three people in the world know the science behind making his coffee iceball. Try it.
We then tried several single origin pour-overs, each has his own characteristics.
The California Summer coffee, which uses orange peel, is a refreshing drink. I preferred the cold version.
One of the great perks about Ocean Grounds is definitely that at 5:00pm it becomes a bar, yes a bar with great cocktails and a delicious selection of craft beers, including their own recipe of Coffee brew by Boxing Cat, bottles of Ballast Point and cans of Twisted Manzanita. If you want to grab one of the absolute last cans of the latter you need to go now! The excellent brewery unfortunately had to be shut down for financial issues. But their double IPA is BEAUTIFUL and Jimmy has bought a small stock that is about to run out. Happy Hour is buy one get one free. Great deal.
Overall a great coffee experience. I suggest to go here when you have the time to enjoy your coffee slowly and not while on the go.
